Methodology
How we rate
Every score on this site is our own editorial assessment — not an average of guest reviews, and not data from any booking platform. Scores are assigned by our desk after researching each property against the five criteria below, drawing on published reporting, first-hand accounts and industry standing. They are reviewed periodically and may be adjusted when a property changes materially. Commissions never influence a score.
I.Service culture
The defining luxury signal. We weigh consistency of service recovery, staff-to-guest ratio, recognition of returning guests, and the quality of the concierge desk above all else.
II.Rooms & suites
Design coherence, mattress and linen quality, bathroom standard, soundproofing and the genuine size of entry-level rooms — not just the flagship suites shown in brochures.
III.Food & drink
Whether the restaurants and bars would deserve a visit on their own merit — breakfast quality, bar programme, and the signature dining room's standing among Londoners, not just guests.
IV.Location & sense of place
Proximity to the best of its neighbourhood, the quality of the immediate streetscape, and whether the property feels rooted in its district rather than dropped into it.
V.Value within tier
At £800–£1,500 per night the question is never cheapness but fairness: does the delivered experience justify the rate relative to direct peers in the same district?
The scale
We score on a five-point scale where 4.5 and above denotes a genuinely exceptional address worth planning a trip around, 4.2–4.4 an excellent stay with minor compromises, and anything below 4.2 does not remain in the directory. Because inclusion is itself the first filter, you will not find low scores here — a property that stops deserving its place is removed rather than downgraded.
